Optical Profilometer for Inspection of Aerospace Parts

Optical proflometers provide individuals with an abundance of uses revolving around inspection and creation but they are most generally used within the aerospace industry.  As technology advances and more individuals become aware of the drastic amount of benefits that tie in with optical profilometers, more individuals are learning how to harness the power of these machines.  With high resolution images and real time results, companies are now provided with the opportunity to diagnose issues with aircraft parts and to participate in the surface inspection of new parts prior to being installed on air crafts.

Profilometers provide the user with the ability to characterize the surface of a specific object easily and efficiently.  Users will also be provided with the ability to calculate any volume loss and to measure the thickness of the coating on the product with micron precision.  They are also known to help operate within small and tight spaces and to operate within hostile environments such as radioactive chambers or chambers with extremely hot or cold environments.  Considering that having the ability to inspect parts to this degree can be exponentially beneficial when related to aerospace parts, inspectors are undoubtably thrilled by the opportunity to have such a skilled machine at their finger tips.

As previously mentioned, optical profilometers provide the user with the ability to measure the thickness of the coating on a specific part of an air craft.  In aerospace, the parts on a craft are generally required to have a multitude of different layers of coating and an extremely detailed surface within that coating.  With the use of this piece of surface metrology equipment individuals will be able to scan the thickness of the objects starting at 10 microns to over 7 mm’s thick with a more advanced amount of precision which has proven to be better than 1 micron.

With the implementation of optical profilometers, flying has become a safer and more common event due to the fact that they help aerospace companies with diagnosing potential problems on their air crafts prior to departure.  Not only do profilometers help to diagnose problems but they are regularly used to perform routine inspections of the air crafts in order to ensure that every part is in working order.  With the growing intelligence that technology provides to the world, optical profilometers can be used in medicine, in automotive creative techniques and with aerospace parts.
